Goldman Reports 1.2 Million Korean Retail Accounts Triggered Margin Calls
Goldman Sachs reported that over 1.2 million leveraged retail accounts in South Korea triggered margin calls as of July 13. Approximately 320,000 to 360,000 of these accounts were fully liquidated. This indicates that about 1 in 30 Korean adults faced margin calls, showing significant financial stress in the retail sector.
The KOSPI closed at 7,284.41 on July 15, up +6.24% after searching for a bottom around the 6,800 level. Margin loan balances fell 9.9% to 34.7077 trillion won as of July 14 from a peak of 38.5312 trillion won on June 22. ![]()
