The cost of hiring a very large crude carrier (VLCC) from the US Gulf Coast to China reached a record $44.8 million on September 15, 2026.
This shortage is partly due to increased demand for longer shipping routes, as the Iran war has stalled tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz.
