Supertanker Shortage Threatens Long-Haul Oil Flow

Hyperdash NewsCommodities

A global shortage of supertankers threatens the long-haul transportation of oil. This scarcity could lead to increased shipping costs and disruptions in crude oil supply, potentially impacting global oil prices. The cost of hiring a very large crude carrier (VLCC) from the US Gulf Coast to China reached a record $44.8 million on September 15, 2026.

This shortage is partly due to increased demand for longer shipping routes, as the Iran war has stalled tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz.
